How to make your home smell amazing

We probably all know it: You come home and immediately, right after you set your foot into your home you either have a weird smell in your nose or you miss that your home doesn’t smell as good as you would want it to. Whatever it might be there are definitely many things you can do to transform your home into that lovely-smelling oasis you envisioned it would be. Because we all deserve a home where we feel like home!

  • Make sure there are no sources for bad smell left in your home. It could be the bins, the sink or the dishwasher that is a bit smelly. Getting rid of all bad odours is key to have a home that smells fresh and inviting.Baking soda is great to absorb bad smells. Just put a bit of it into a bowl and place it for example in your fridge or on your kitchen counter.
  • Vinegar is also very helpful when it comes to eliminate bad smells. It absorbs all nasty smells. Don’t be afraid your home won’t smell like vinegar then. It just leaves freshness. You can also just leave a cup of white vinegar on the kitchen counter and let it do the job.
  • Now that we got rid of all unpleasant smells we can start to freshen up our home with nice smells. Scented Candles are always a good and easy way to bring scents we love into our home. Just spread a few of your favourite candles over your place and light them whenever you want to. The smell will welcome you! Of course, never leave a burning candle unattended!
  • Diffuse your favourite essential oils. Depending on your mood you can choose which scent you prefer. It could be Orange to lift you up and give a bit of energy, it could be Lavender for calm and relaxation. Or you could mix them. The sky is the limit!
  • Create a stovetop potpourri. It’s actually very easy. You can use for example apple slices, cinnamon sticks and clove or maybe rosemary, vanilla and even cranberries or just use lemon rinds, from lemons you used for cooking to avoid any waste. Just toss everything together in a pot with water and bring it to a simmer. It will definitely smell amazing!
  • Make your own DIY fabric spray. Simply combine water with a tablespoon of baking powder and 10 drops of essential oil in a spray bottle. Give it a good shake and it is ready to go! Your place will smell fantastic and it’s also cheap and easy to make and also environmentally friendly on top!
  • You can also roast a handful of coffee beans for 10 minutes with 200 degree in your oven for a warm and lovely smell that reminds you of your favourite Café!
  • Try to warm up vanilla extract in your oven. Give a few drops of it into an oven dish and bake it for 30 minutes. This also creates a warm and inviting smell in your home.
  • We already covered DIY fabric spray but did you know that you can also make your own DIY room spray? It’s as easy as making a cup of tea: pour some hot water over a bunch of herbs like rosemary, mint or eucalyptus, let it cool down and fill it into a spray bottle. Voilá! You have your own room spray which is also naturally and environmentally friendly!
  • Bake some biscuits! Really! That’s a trick from estate agents actually because it instantly gives your house this welcoming, warm and homey smell! And having the chance to eat a bunch of warm, home-made cookies is also not that bad!
  • A very easy and cheap way to fill your home with good smells is probably one we don’t think about too much: Open your windows and let fresh air in! It’s so easy that we just forget about it!
  • Hang dried herbs in your kitchen. This offers 2 advantages at once: You have a lovely herby smell and you always have dried aromatic herbs on hand while cooking. Just try it with rosemary, sage or bay leaf.
  • Spread reed diffusers all over your place. Fill them with your favourite essential oils and let them do the rest. You can use different scents for different rooms, for example lavender for your bedroom, lemongrass for your office and orange for your bathroom.
  • Sprinkle a few drops of essential oil on the radiators. When they heat up they will release a nice and subtle smell.
  • And my last tip is another DIY product again: DIY carpet cleaner! Very easy to make as you simply combine baking soda and essential oils. Just sprinkle it onto your carpet, let it sit for the night and vacuum it afterwards. This will give your carpet a fresh, nice smell!

I hope you will find my tips helpful! I will go now and light a few of my favourite scented candles to bring some more lovely scents into our home.
